Introduction to Bookkeeping
New to bookkeeping? This introduction covers the fundamentals — what bookkeeping is, why it matters, and how staying on top of your numbers keeps your business compliant and financially clear.

Bookkeeping is the process of recording, organising, and maintaining the financial transactions of a business. Every time money comes in or goes out — a sale, a purchase, a wage payment, a bank fee — that transaction needs to be recorded accurately and consistently. Bookkeeping is the foundation on which all financial reporting, tax compliance, and business decision-making is built.
For small business owners, bookkeeping often starts as something you do yourself — entering invoices, reconciling the bank account, keeping receipts. And for very small or early-stage businesses, that can work. But as a business grows, the volume and complexity of transactions increases, and the cost of errors or missed obligations grows with it.
Good bookkeeping keeps your business compliant. In Australia, businesses with a turnover of $75,000 or more are required to register for GST and lodge Business Activity Statements (BAS) — either monthly or quarterly. Accurate bookkeeping is what makes it possible to lodge correctly and on time. Errors in your books mean errors in your BAS, which can lead to penalties and interest charges.
Beyond compliance, good bookkeeping gives you visibility over your business finances. When your records are accurate and up to date, you can see at a glance how much you're owed, what you owe, whether you're profitable, and how your cash flow is tracking. That information is essential for making good decisions — whether you're considering hiring staff, investing in equipment, or simply planning for the next quarter.
The most common bookkeeping tasks for a small business include: recording income and expenses, reconciling bank and credit card accounts, managing invoices and payments, processing payroll, and preparing records for BAS lodgement. Most of these tasks are done in accounting software — Xero is the platform we use and recommend for its ease of use, real-time reporting, and strong integration with Australian tax requirements.
