Payday Super is Coming: What Australian Employers Need to Know

From 1 July 2026, the way Australian employers pay superannuation is changing — and the deadline is closer than many business owners realise. Under the new Payday Super rules, super contributions will need to be paid at the same time as wages, rather than quarterly. This is one of the most significant changes to payroll obligations in years.

Currently, employers are required to pay the Superannuation Guarantee (SG) at least quarterly. The new rules will require super to be paid on each payday — or within a very short window of it. The ATO will have real-time visibility over whether contributions are being made correctly and on time.

For businesses running weekly or fortnightly payroll, this means super will need to be calculated, processed, and cleared to the employee's fund far more frequently. Cash flow planning becomes critical — you can no longer rely on holding super funds for up to three months before remitting.

The penalty regime is also tightening. The Superannuation Guarantee Charge (SGC) — which applies when super is paid late or incorrectly — will be calculated daily under the new system, making late payments significantly more costly than they are today.

To prepare, start by reviewing your payroll software to confirm it will support Payday Super processing. Speak with your bookkeeper or payroll provider about how your pay runs will need to be structured. And review your cash flow to ensure you have sufficient funds available on each payday to cover both wages and super.
